There's a Good Reason it's Called Shipwreck Coast!

Our accommodation in Ucluelet was perfect, an Airbnb called Shipwreck Coast. We had a comfortable bed, a small well equipped kitchen where we could make breakfast, supper, and prepare picnic lunches to take with us to the beach. Our hosts even provided picnic dishes, beach towels and blankets. The bathroom had a claw foot tub and a modern shower and lots of thick towels. Our hosts were so friendly and welcomed us with a tour of the immediate area.

Every morning and evening, I walked down the little path and cross the tiny bridge to the small bay. When the tide was out I'd scour the beach for shells and driftwood and generally explore the tidal pools and rocks. When the tide was in, I'd sit on a log, listen to the waves and breath in the fresh ocean air. What bliss.

Wild Pacific Trail

One of the first things we did was walk the Wild Pacific Trail. There was an entrance just yards from our Airbnb. Conveniently located at regular intervals along the trail, there were benches with unobstructed views of the rocky shoreline. As my partner was waiting for knee replacement surgery, we found this especially helpful. Having a chance to sit regularly meant we could walk much further. The weather blessed us with sunshine and hardly any wind so we thoroughly enjoyed our stroll to and from the Amphitrite Point Lighthouse. Along the way we saw many of nature's sculpted trees, twisted in ways that boggle the mind. About a kilometer from the start of the trail, there's a post with cables on it specifically for tourists to leave "Love Locks". I wish I had known about it, I would have taken one and participated. Next time maybe.

The next adventure was up the coast toward Tofino. More awesome experiences to follow.
