A Day at the Beach

Writer's picture: Lorna JonesLorna Jones

I love being at the beach. It doesn't matter where, as long as I can walk, hear the waves, sit a spell and feel the wind on my face. Being at the beach is like hearing the earth breath.

The west coast of Vancouver Island has some stunning beaches and as we drove from Ucluelet to Tofino, we stopped in at the Wickaninnish Beach. There's a small building at one end of the beach, which many years ago was the Wickanninnish Inn. I remember going there in 1976 when all we could afford was a coffee, but we sat there as long as we could, looking out over the ocean and promising ourselves that one day we would return. It took until 2007, but we finally did return to the Inn. It had relocated and was now a huge luxurious facility. We had four perfect days there.

It felt great to be back there, watch the surfers, eat our picnic, enjoy the sunshine, and walk on the golden sand.
