The Majestic Coast of Newfoundland

Writer's picture: Lorna JonesLorna Jones

My last day with Cheri was packed with incredible sights. We had blue skies and sunshine, so we headed to the coast at Elliston, with the hope of seeing puffins. Elliston is known as the root cellar capital of the world. Some of these structures have survived for nearly two centuries.

The other attraction there, from around May to September. is an accessible land-based puffin colony. When I visited the last time, it was June and the rocks were densely populated by the little birds. This time, farther out to sea above one of the rocky islands, we saw tiny black dots darting about the sky. We assumed they were puffins. From the viewing area, we finally spotted a couple of them sitting among the dozens of seagulls. However, I did not count this as a wasted trip, because the coastline there is awesome with its stunning rock formations.

I was overwhelmed with emotion as we walked along the cliffs. The staggering history contained in the creation of those ridges. The formidable power of the ocean. The stunning colours. I felt small and insignificant against this majestic backdrop.

Our next stop was Bonavista, a town full of history and colourful houses - the feature of my next Happy Adventures blog. Be sure to check back.
