The Magic of Lynn Canyon

I had a hankering to visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge. The last time I was there was shortly after it opened in 1889. Just kidding, it's so long ago I can't remember when. After checking online, I discovered it cost around $50 ($100 for both Gene and I). I decided that was more than I was willing to spend on a whim. I'm sure it's worth it but with ferry and accommodation costs, it was a little too steep for my budget this time around. Gene remembered, from previous visits to Vancouver, a smaller suspension bridge located in Lynn Canyon. We could visit there with no charge, so that is exactly what we did.

We followed our maps app and arrived at Lynn Canyon. Adjacent to the parking lot, there is an Ecology Centre which we thoroughly enjoyed visiting. Then we crossed the bridge and explored the trails. Many of the trees are 80 - 100 years old. The magnificence of those old warriors is awe inspiring. The lush greenery, the smell of cedar, the light dancing through the leaves, the gnarled exposed roots, the huddles of mushrooms in small crevasses are what makes this place magical.

At the end of the trail (that I walked) was the "30 foot pool". Clear, cold, deep water where folks can cool off in the shade or take a quick dip. Even though it was cloudy and threatening rain while we were there, it was warm and humid, the water looked very inviting.

If you're in Vancouver and need a cheaper alternative to the Capilano Bridge, I'd suggest visiting Lynn Canyon. It's stunningly beautiful. One of these days, I will cough up the dollars required to visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge as I have heard fantastic things about it but for this trip, Lynn Canyon was a great substitute.

Note: The Capilano Bridge is 140m long and 70m high in comparison to the 48m length of Lynn Canyon Bridge which is 50m high.
