They say a change is as good as a rest... sometimes it's better. This past summer we headed out to Saskatoon for a few days and it proved to be a lovely change.
We stayed downtown in an awesome Airbnb. It was a two storey condo on the 17 and 18th floor. We were able to walk out the front door and have easy access to restaurants, parks, the river valley, historic buildings, the Museum, and the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival.
Our first morning, we decided to try a local restaurant for breakfast. It was about a ten minute walk which gave us an opportunity to admire the intriguing architecture and some of the large murals Saskatoon is famous for.
Once at the Living Sky Restaurant, we weren't disappointed. The service was great, prices reasonable, and the food was delicious. The walls displayed the work of a local artist. If I was wealthier I would have purchased at least one of his pieces (there were several canvasses which appealed to me).
Later that day we walked along the river valley. Two pelicans soared in and landed on the river. The park was so peaceful as we strolled to the Remai Modern Museum. There's a sign right outside the building which honours singer/songwriter/artist Joni Mitchell. I have to admit that some of the exhibits in the museum were a little avant-garde for my tastes but I enjoyed several of the displays and especially the indigenous gallery.
Saskatoon has a beautiful river valley and during our stay we enjoyed several walks there. We also treated ourselves to an ice cream from Saskatoon Refreshments (a converted double decker bus from England).
One of things I noticed on our walks were signs painted on the sidewalks encouraging cyclists not to ride into the crosswalks, that's kind of neat. The flowers were abundant even downtown where there are lots of commercial and apartment buildings. The tranquility of our first day in Saskatoon certainly helped us unwind and relax, even the weather cooperated as some enormous storm clouds conveniently skirted the city limits rather than drenching us on our walk! I'd definitely recommend Saskatoon as a destination during the summer.
