I'm not a "morning person" but I have to say that getting up early enough to drive into the countryside from Saskatoon, and eat breakfast at The Berry Barn, was more than worth it. The sun was shining as we drove up the long driveway toward the huge red barn-like building. There's a gigantic parking lot lined by trees on the one side and greenhouses on the other. We arrived shortly before they opened the doors and were among the first in line. Outside the restaurant, there were milk container/tractor-seat stools to sit on. There were also two statues of an old man and old woman sitting in rocking chairs. The children, waiting with their parents, were excited and impatient. Although my partner had eaten there before, I hadn't and the children's growing anticipation was catching, I could hardly wait!
The doors finally opened and we all poured in. Efficiently, group by group, we were escorted to our seats. Our table had a magnificent view of the garden and river and the fresh air washed over us through the screen windows.
We ordered. I'd heard their waffles were excellent so that's what I ordered and my partner had the "Classic Breakfast" (two eggs, cooked how you like them, served with your choice of Smoked Farmer Sausage or Three Slices of Bacon & pan fried hash browns. Chef’s selection of toast). I trundled off to the "Topping Bar" and loaded my waffle with peaches, strawberries, Saskatoon berries, and a big dollop of whipped cream. I ended up giving one quarter of the waffle to my partner in exchange for a taste of the home-made sausage and by the time I finished, I was stuffed but very satisfied!
When we had digested our scrumptious breakfasts a little, we wandered outside and walked through the beautiful gardens along the bank of the South Saskatchewan River.
Now it was time to return to Saskatoon. I will fondly recall my time at Berry Barn for many years to come.
Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan
In the afternoon, I attended a production of "As You Like It", part of the "Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan" Summer Festival. With no air conditioning, it was incredibly hot in the Affinity Credit Union Main Stage tent. I waved my program like a fan and managed to survive! The show was excellent, the actors talented, the set was simple but effective, and I especially loved the costumes designed by Beverley Kobelsky.
Time to Return Home to St. Albert
All too soon, our mini vacation in Saskatoon was over. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing our family, visiting the museum, walking the river valley parks, and experiencing our first VIP movie. We appreciated the mix of old and new architecture, and the wonderful hospitality of our Airbnb hosts. The high rise we stayed in was so convenient and close to downtown and the river valley. I'm hoping to return to Saskatoon at least once a year. It's a charming city with many things to enjoy and more to see than possible in a few days.
