The two days spent with Shauna and her family, in their bright yellow house in Lower Island Cove, was like visiting an internet-free paradise. Her eldest daughter kindly gave up her bedroom for me, which I appreciated very much. Each of the three bedrooms had beautiful quilts on the beds. In the bathroom sat a lovely old "claw foot" tub. The main living area featured a wood stove with a cozy rocking chair close by. Each part of the house was adorned with Shauna's creative touches.
A short walk from the house takes you to cliffs overlooking the ocean. As we stood there, I could imagine my mom saying, "Ah, the sight, the smell, and the sound of the ocean, my favourite place to be." Whenever I'm beside the ocean, I always feel like I'm home. It's probably from growing up in England where you are never very far from the coast. As a child, my parents often took my brother and me to the seaside. Those trips were packed with joyous experiences.
Let's Go Exploring
Noel (Shauna's husband) suggested that while we had light, we should go exploring. What a gift, someone after my own heart. Noel drove Shauna, me, and my camera around, stopping each time I wanted to snap a picture. Shauna's a photographer so perhaps that's why Noel understood my need but whatever the case, I am indebted to him for his patient indulgence.
A weathered forsaken boat! A heritage property from 1860! A vacant church built in 1916! Abandoned buildings, some frozen in time with beds, chesterfields, and even kitchen items on the pantry shelves! Root cellars! I was in picture-taking heaven.
By the time the light was fading, we were all a little chilled and ready for home. Shauna and Noel prepared a scrumptious dinner of moose sausage, corn on the cob, tomatoes, onions and peppers, which truly hit the spot. As my endearing mother-in-law always used to say, "My sufficiency was sufancified."
After dinner, we headed outside to look at the night sky. With no light pollution, it was magical. Magnificent! And then, as if the heavens were bestowing a blessing upon me, a shooting star streaked across the sky. What a perfect end to a perfect day.
